Hammocks are one of those things that people don’t talk about much, but once you’ve experienced them, you’ll never want to live without them again. If you’re looking for the best hammock for your balcony, there are many other factors to consider as well.

What size do you want? How large is your balcony? What type of hammock are you looking for? Do you need something portable or permanent? In this article, we’ll cover all that and more. Let’s begin.

How to Hang Your Hammock On Your Balcony With Drilling?

So you want to enjoy chilling in your hammock on your balcony. You will have the option to hang your hammock with drilling and without drilling; I will cover both options in this article.

There are 2 ways to hang your hammock on your balcony with drilling. You can hang your hammock from the balcony ceiling or wall.

Let me explain each method one by one.

1- From the Balcony Ceiling

This is the same method we read in Tips on How to Hang a Hammock Indoors

The first step is to decide where exactly you’d like want to hang your hammock. The distance between them should ideally be about 15 feet to keep the hammocks from sagging too deep. You can shorten or lengthen this distance on personal preference.

Next, you need to use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joists. Mark the exact center points for each joist. Now get your electric drill and start drilling small pilot holes into the center of each stud.

You now want to drill a three-eighth-inch hole for the heavy‐weighted screw. Tighten the screws. You need to attach it securely so that it can support your entire body weight. If your screws are at least 2 inches long, then they’re probably strong enough for the job.

Finally, you attach some carabiners to each end of the chain, and then you connect them to the screws, and you’re done.

2- Attach to the Wall

Locate and measure two studs along the wall. Studs are vertical members used to support drywall or plasterboard. They’re typically spaced 16 inches apart. Measure the distance between them. Grab a tape measure and make marks on every inch along the wall.

Once you’ve marked off an entire length of the wall, check the measurements against the stud spacing. Make any adjustments needed to ensure the hammock hangs evenly.

  • You should choose studs about 10 to 15 feet (3.0 to 4.5 m) apart. If possible, reserve at least 10 feet (3.0 m). Keep the height in mind. 5 and 6 feet would be ideal. That way, when finished, your hammock will hang at the perfect height.

Before attaching any additional hardware, drill a hole into each stud marking. These pre-drilled pilot holes prevent cracks from forming in the wood frame.

  • A 38 in (0.95 cm) drill bit is the way to go.

Screw eye screws into the wall. Twist them into each pilot hole until they’re completely firm and sturdy. An “eye bolt” or “eye screw” is a screw that curves at one end; that curve is perfectly designed for hanging your hammock.

Hang your hammock between two eye bolt hooks using a length of rope or chain. Make sure your hammock is securely fastened to each bolt. Now that you’ve got your very own balcony hammock installed, you can enjoy and relax.

How to Hang a Hammock on Your Balcony Without Drilling?

As not everybody is able to drill holes in their balcony walls, railing, or ceiling, we’ll discuss 2 more options to hang your hammock without damaging anything.

1- Attach to the Balcony Railing

Ready for an easy one? Just hang your hammock from a railing on your terrace.

It doesn’t take long to install. You can put the hooks to the balcony railing and then attach the hammock to them. That’s it.

You could also use hammock straps. Suspension straps can be used anywhere there are two solid points. Make sure that the points can support your body weight. If you’re not completely certain,  just don’t take the risk and look for another method. For example, using a hammock stand.

2- Hang it on a Hammock Stand

All that needs to be done is assemble the hammock stand itself. Usually, the stand comes with a clear instruction manual for assembling it. When done, just hang your hammock and adjust it accordingly to your preferred height.

Rope Hammock

Rope hammocks are classic designs. It’s a hammock made of rope tied together in knots. It works well enough but isn’t as comfortable as a fabric hammock because the holes can cause discomfort.

I wouldn’t recommend this hammock to my heavier friends.

Hammock Chair

If you are looking for the most practical balcony hammock, it would be the hammock chair. The chair hammock occupies less space than a traditional hammock.

Hammock with Stand

Perhaps the best hammock for your balcony is a hammock on a stand. You won’t have to worry about can you hang a hammock from the ceiling without drilling holes into walls or tying ropes in different places around your balcony space.

If you have a bigger-sized balcony, this is a great option.

Foldable hammock/ Portable Hammock

This would be the cheapest option.

A foldable hammock is a good alternative to the traditional hammock, especially if you live in a smaller space or are looking to save money. A foldable hammock is a suitable hammock for your small balcony because it is lightweight, easy to set up and pack away, and doesn’t require much maintenance.

With a foldable hammock, you can enjoy it on your balcony without having to spend big bucks.
